Testing the Antiseptic Property of Tridat procumbens L.
ABSTRACT
Weeds are plants that are considered to be a nuisance in a garden or lawn. Weeds are unwanted mainly because they choke out the growth of other plants by overcrowding or using up nutrients from the soil since they grow and spread out easily. They are numerous, yet they serve useless. To make use of these weeds, the researcher planned to make an antiseptic out Tridax procumbens L., a weed that vastly spreads out in the Philippines. It was believed by some of the researcher's relatives that Tridax could cure wounds, the researcher conducted this study that is focus on making an antiseptic and thus testing its effect to Staphylococcus aureus.
This study came up from extracting an antibacterial agent out of Tridax procumbens L. in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. To produce the antibacterial agent, the leaves of Tridax procumbens L. were extracted. The extract was used as the active component in the antiseptic. The pure extract and the antiseptic were applied to Staphylococcus aureus with amoxicillin as the control set-up. Due to unexpected results, there is no zone of inhibition made by the extract and the formulated cream on any set-ups from all trials. Therefore, no computations will be made to show the significant difference between the effect of the extract on the growth of the bacteria. It showed that the Tridax extract cannot inhibit the growth of S. aureus.
